Basic Cosplay Starter Kit List

Basic Cosplay Starter Kit

Cosplay doesn’t have to start with a sewing machine and a 10-piece armor set. You can get started with just a few basic tools, a little creativity, and some helpful tips. Whether you're buying your first costume or crafting it from the ground up, here’s what we recommend as your beginner cosplay starter kit.

1. Wig Essentials

You’ll need:

  • A character wig (or similar wig you can style)

  • Wig cap

  • Wig stand or head (optional but helpful) Amazon Listing

  • Comb or detangling brush

Bonus: Got2B Freeze Spray or wig-safe hairspray for styling (Amazon Listing)

2. Cosplay Makeup Basics

Suggested items:

  • Foundation that matches your skintone

  • Primer

  • Eyeliner and mascara

  • Brow pencil or shadow (especially if your character has strong brows)

  • Setting powder or spray

  • Optional: character-colored eyeshadow, contour for facial shape matching

Note: If you're doing a masculine character and want to soften or reshape features — contour and brow shaping go a long way.

3. Basic Tools & Materials

Recommended supplies:

Even if you're buying your cosplay, having these on hand helps with quick fixes!

4. Closet Cosplay Staples

Encourage budget-friendly creativity:

  • Solid color tees, pants, or skirts in bold character colors

  • Boots, gloves, or accessories that can be reused

  • Belts, jackets, and thrifted costume jewelry

Closet cosplay is a GREAT entry point — fun, fast, and low stress!

5. Character Reference Images

Always save a few high-quality photos of your character from different angles. These will help with:

  • Wig styling

  • Prop accuracy

  • Makeup matching

  • Communicating with commissioners or photographers

6. Confidence & Community

This is just as important as any glue gun. Cosplay is about expression, not perfection. Find local or online cosplay groups, connect with others, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
